Prioritize stress relief for your optimal health
Yoga such as Vinyasa Flow, Yin, Slow Flow, meditation and mindfulness practices have been well-known associates of relaxation yet it seems only in the most recent decade that we’ve seen need and demand soar to new heights. Why so?
In today’s fast paced world, stress is one of the most prevalent problems affecting us all. It has become increasingly clear that this is a major contributor, if not underlying cause, of many physical symptoms and illness we experience.
We can all experience short-term periods of stress with little implication to our health. Work, study, family, finance or relationships all present challenges at times, and essentially contribute to our personal growth. However, sustained periods and loads of stress pose detrimental effects to our long-term health and happiness.
Cortisol is known as a major stress hormone that rises when we are feeling under pressure, overwhelmed, rushed, tired and depleted. When cortisol levels run continually high the nervous system is placed into a state of fight or flight, making it almost impossible for the body to heal, repair and replenish its self.
Ways we can find to slow down and counterbalance stress factors in our lives are invaluable for our holistic well-ness; the wellbeing of our bodies, minds and spirits.
Yoga flow and meditation have been found to consistently reduce cortisol levels in the blood. Deep relaxation produced by meditation for example, triggers the brain to release beneficial neurotransmitters, including oxytocin and dopamine. Oxytocin triggers reactions that support your ability to de-stress and also to behave calmly in stressful situations.
Its an important for us all to consider the load we’re under in our day to day lives so we can make conscious choices about how to care for ourselves.
Taking and making time for regular practices such as mindfulness, yoga and meditation can become simple lifestyle habits that will strengthen our physical, emotional and mental health so that we can start to thrive.
